Learn how to Stop Piggy-Backing!! - Secure Your Wireless Internet Connection

If you are using a laptop with a wireless adapter or internal wireless, and connecting to your Broadband internet via Wireless router, you need to secure it. Because wireless internet does not stop within walls, it could be virtually used by anyone with a receiver just like yours.



Potential devices could be a PDA like O2, Sony Ericsson PDA Mobile with WiFi, Nokia N95, a laptop with WiFi, a Camera with WiFi etc can use your Internet connection. This slows down the speed of your browsing or downloading. So you have to make sure only you use your internet connection, or you and your family only uses your Wireless Router.



  1. Keep your Wireless router on.
  2. Login to your Router Settings Page [usually 192.168.1.1 will be your page, else refer your router manual/website]
  3. Once you are in, enter your credentials [usually admin:password, or admin:admin, refer your manual]
  4. Inside, you shall find "Advanced Wireless Settings" in the menu, click the link.
  5. You should find the "Wireless Card Access List" click Setup Access List.
  6. Press "Add" button, and your adapter's MAC address with the Device name should apprear, if it does not, manually enter your MAC address. [refer your manual to find your MAC address]

  7. Press apply, and the router would restart with new setting.

You are secure now.

If you like to add your wife's laptop too, loop through the above process, and add her MAC Address.
